Clerks was written and directed by Kevin Smith and released in 1994 through Miramax Films after its celebrated debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Shot in black and white on a budget of roughly $27,000, the film became a landmark of American independent cinema and launched Smith's View Askewniverse, influencing a generation of low-budget filmmakers who saw it as proof that a personal, dialogue-driven story could find a wide audience.
