Clerks was written and directed by Kevin Smith and released in 1994 through Miramax Films after its celebrated debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Shot on black-and-white 35mm for roughly $27,000, the film became a defining work of American independent cinema, capturing a generation of disaffected young workers through sharp, dialogue-driven comedy set almost entirely within a New Jersey convenience store.

This cell, titled Dante Hicks and Randal Graves, preserves a continuous interior shot from Quick Stop Groceries featuring both central characters. Brian O'Halloran as Dante stands behind the counter, the store's sardonic shoplifting notice visible in frame, while Jeff Anderson as Randal leans in from above — a composition that quietly encapsulates the film's entire dynamic between reluctant duty and cheerful indifference.
