Shrek 2 was released by DreamWorks Animation in May 2004 and became the highest-grossing film of that year, cementing the studio's place alongside Pixar as a dominant force in feature animation. Building on the original's fairy-tale satire, the sequel expanded its world with sharper wit and a larger cast, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and leaving a lasting mark on the decade's popular culture.
