DreamWorks Animation released Shrek in May 2001, marking a turning point in computer-generated feature filmmaking and signaling a genuine challenge to Disney's long dominance of the animated family film. Directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, the film drew on William Steig's picture book while building something distinctly irreverent, earning the inaugural Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and becoming one of the defining popular films of its decade.
