DreamWorks Animation released Shrek in May 2001, marking a turning point for computer-animated features and for the studio itself. Directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, the film drew on William Steig's picture book while building an irreverent fairy-tale world that found enormous popular and critical success, winning the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its blend of fractured folklore and contemporary humor established a template that shaped animated filmmaking through the decade.
