DreamWorks Animation's Shrek arrived in May 2001 as a landmark production from PDI, the visual effects studio that had been pushing the boundaries of computer-generated imagery throughout the late 1990s. The film marked a turning point for DreamWorks Pictures as a serious competitor in feature animation, drawing enormous anticipation ahead of its release and going on to win the inaugural Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
