Columbia Pictures released Ghostbusters II in June 1989, reuniting the original cast five years after the first film became a cultural phenomenon. Directed by Ivan Reitman, the sequel leaned into the franchise's animated identity, arriving during the peak run of The Real Ghostbusters television series, which had already introduced Slimer to a new generation of younger fans.
