Beetlejuice arrived from Warner Bros. in the spring of 1988, directed by Tim Burton in only his second feature film. The production established Burton as a singular voice in American cinema, blending dark comedy, practical effects, and a genuinely eccentric visual sensibility that set it apart from anything else in that era of Hollywood filmmaking. The film became a cultural touchstone and launched Michael Keaton's portrayal of the title character into lasting popular recognition.
