Warner Bros. released Beetlejuice in March 1988, directed by Tim Burton in only his second feature film. The production marked an early collaboration between Burton and Michael Keaton, and helped establish the director's signature gothic-comic aesthetic. The film was a commercial and critical success, earning an Academy Award for Best Makeup and cementing Burton as a distinctive voice in American cinema during a period when studio fantasy films were finding renewed mainstream audiences.
This cell captures the exterior neon signage of the Dante's Inferno Room, the gaudy underworld nightclub associated with Betelgeuse throughout the film. The repeated compositions emphasize the blue-lit atmospheric quality of the sequence, with the GIRLS and INFERNO ROOM marquee signs anchoring the frame. It is a strong example of the film's theatrical production design rendered in 35mm.
