Warner Bros. released Beetlejuice in March 1988, with Tim Burton directing from a script by Michael McDowell and Warren Skaaren. The film arrived at a moment when Burton was establishing his singular gothic-comic sensibility, and its blend of practical effects, Danny Elfman's score, and a career-defining central performance made it an immediate cultural touchstone. It remains one of the defining fantasy comedies of the decade.
