Warner Bros. released Beetlejuice in March 1988, giving Tim Burton his first major studio hit and establishing the gothic-comic sensibility that would define his career. Working from a script by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson, Burton conjured a genuinely strange afterlife mythology that found wide commercial and critical success, earning an Academy Award for Best Makeup. The film remains a landmark of late-1980s fantasy filmmaking and a touchstone of practical effects craftsmanship.
