Hocus Pocus was released by Walt Disney Pictures in July 1993, directed by Kenny Ortega and produced during a period when the studio was experimenting with live-action genre fare alongside its animated renaissance. Though modestly received on initial release, the film built a devoted following through cable and home video, eventually becoming one of the most recognizable Halloween titles in American popular culture. Its blend of comedy, horror, and practical effects work reflects the particular sensibility of early-1990s family filmmaking.
