FILM NOTES

Walt Disney Feature Animation released Lilo & Stitch in June 2002, a deliberately intimate production set apart from the studio's earlier fairy-tale epics. Directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, the film found unexpected commercial and critical success, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. Its hand-painted watercolor backgrounds and grounded emotional core gave it a distinct identity within the Disney canon, and its promotional materials reflected the same warmth and humor that defined the finished film.

This cell, titled Stitch Surfing, captures the alien protagonist riding a surfboard across a bright ocean setting, grinning with characteristic mischief. Nani Pelekai is partially visible in the upper frame, her presence anchoring the scene in the Hawaiian world the two characters share. Drawn across three frames of slight animation progression, the composition offers a clean low-angle view that showcases the fluid draftsmanship of Disney's traditional 2D animation in one of its final celebrated chapters.
