Edward Scissorhands was released by 20th Century Fox in November 1990, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder. The film arrived at a moment when mainstream studio cinema rarely accommodated such unguarded sentiment, and its blend of gothic fairy tale with suburban satire earned it lasting cultural standing.
