Cars 2 was released by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios in June 2011, the studio's twelfth feature and a deliberate departure into spy-thriller territory. Directed by John Lasseter, it represented Pixar's first direct sequel to an original property and marked a significant expansion of the Cars universe into international settings and espionage storytelling, drawing on classic Bond-era cinema as a clear influence.
