Pixar Animation Studios released Cars 2 in June 2011, marking the studio's first direct sequel and its foray into globe-trotting spy adventure territory. Built around the franchise's beloved cast of anthropomorphic vehicles, the film expanded the world of Radiator Springs onto an international stage. While critically divisive, it performed strongly at the box office and deepened the Cars merchandising universe considerably, cementing the franchise as one of Disney-Pixar's most commercially enduring properties of the era.
