Pixar Animation Studios released Cars 2 in June 2011, marking the studio's first direct sequel and a notable departure from the intimate racing drama of the original. The film leaned into globe-trotting spy adventure, drawing on the visual language of classic espionage cinema. Photographed on 35mm for theatrical release, the production represented one of the final chapters of the analog era for major animated features before digital projection became standard.
