Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies released The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in November 2004, bringing the beloved animated television series to the theatrical format for the first time. Directed by series creator Stephen Hillenburg, the film balanced its roots in hand-drawn animation with a live-action finale, earning strong box office returns and cementing SpongeBob's place in popular culture beyond the small screen.
