FILM NOTES

New Line Cinema released Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in December 2001, adapting the first volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved trilogy. The film marked a turning point in epic fantasy filmmaking, combining practical effects, location photography in New Zealand, and early digital tools to bring Middle-earth to the screen with unprecedented scale and sincerity.

This cell, titled Gandalf, presents three consecutive frames from the theatrical trailer, each a close-up of Ian McKellen as Gandalf. The shot is oriented upside-down, with warm light falling across the wizard's weathered face against a dark background. The slight shift in framing across the strip suggests a slow camera move, capturing McKellen's quietly commanding presence in an intimate, almost portrait-like moment.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
