New Line Cinema released Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring in December 2001, launching one of the most ambitious fantasy productions in Hollywood history. The film earned widespread critical acclaim and multiple Academy Awards, establishing a new benchmark for large-scale epic filmmaking and introducing Tolkien's Middle-earth to a generation of new audiences.

This cell, titled Gimli, Frodo, Merry and Pippin, captures three frames from the Fellowship's arduous crossing of a snow-covered mountain pass, almost certainly Caradhras. Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Dominic Monaghan as Merry Brandybuck, Billy Boyd as Pippin Took, and John Rhys-Davies as Gimli are visible against rocky terrain and snow, the near-identical framing across all three frames conveying the relentless, grinding nature of the journey.
