New Line Cinema released The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in December 2001, launching one of the most ambitious fantasy trilogies ever committed to film. Peter Jackson's adaptation of Tolkien's beloved novel arrived at a moment when epic filmmaking was being redefined, and the film's theatrical trailer generated enormous anticipation, offering audiences their first sustained look at Middle-earth rendered on a grand scale.
