FILM NOTES

New Line Cinema's 2001 adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring marked a turning point in fantasy filmmaking, demonstrating that epic literary source material could be rendered with both technical ambition and emotional fidelity. Directed by Peter Jackson, the film launched a trilogy that reshaped blockbuster production and remains a landmark of early digital-era cinema. The theatrical trailer itself became a cultural event, circulating widely before the December release.

These consecutive 35mm frames capture a close-up of Gandalf, portrayed by Ian McKellen, his face tilted and surrounded by what appears to be fur or flowing hair — a dramatically composed moment drawn from the trailer's deliberate, atmospheric editing. The tight framing and inverted angle reflect the trailer's effort to present the wizard as a figure of weight and mystery.
