Warner Bros. released the live-action Scooby-Doo in June 2002, bringing the long-running Hanna-Barbera animated franchise to theaters for the first time. Directed by Raja Gosnell, the film balanced nostalgia for older fans with broad family appeal, and its trailer circulated widely in 35mm prints ahead of the summer season. The production marked an early major role for Sarah Michelle Gellar following Buffy the Vampire Slayer and introduced Matthew Lillard's widely praised take on Shaggy Rogers.
