Warner Bros. released The Matrix in March 1999, a science fiction film written and directed by the Wachowskis. It arrived at a moment when digital effects and philosophical storytelling were converging in mainstream cinema, and its influence on visual language, action choreography, and cultural conversation proved lasting. The film earned four Academy Awards and redefined what audiences expected from the genre.
