Warner Bros. Pictures released The Lego Movie in February 2014, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Working against considerable skepticism about a feature built around a toy brand, the film earned widespread critical praise for its wit, visual invention, and surprisingly sincere themes about creativity and conformity. Its success reshaped expectations for animated studio filmmaking and launched an ongoing franchise.
