FILM NOTES

Warner Bros. released The Lego Movie in February 2014, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Built on a beloved toy brand, the film surprised audiences and critics alike with its wit and visual invention, grossing over 460 million dollars worldwide and establishing a new animated franchise. It arrived at a moment when animation studios were pushing the boundaries of computer-generated imagery, and its deliberate simulation of stop-motion brick animation gave it a distinctive handcrafted quality unusual for a major studio production.

This cell captures the opening credits sequence, specifically the title card crediting directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller by way of their earlier feature Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Appearing three times across the frame, the card sits against a dark dotted field that evokes the texture of a printed instruction sheet, immediately signaling the film's playful relationship with the Lego aesthetic before a single brick appears on screen.
