Forrest Gump was released by Paramount Pictures in July 1994, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks in the title role. The film swept that year's Academy Awards, taking home six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor. Drawing on decades of American history, it became one of the defining cultural touchstones of the 1990s and remains among the highest-grossing films ever produced.
