Forrest Gump was released by Paramount Pictures in July 1994, directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on Winston Groom's 1986 novel. The film swept that year's Academy Awards, taking six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. Its blend of American history, sentiment, and technical innovation made it one of the defining studio releases of the decade, and its 35mm prints remain among the most recognizable photographic records of mid-nineties Hollywood filmmaking.
