FILM NOTES

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace was released by Lucasfilm through 20th Century Fox in May 1999, arriving sixteen years after Return of the Jedi and carrying the full weight of one of cinema's most devoted audiences. Directed by George Lucas, it marked a return to large-scale practical and digital filmmaking that reshaped industry expectations for visual effects and production design well into the following decade.

This cell, titled R2-D2 and C-3PO, captures the two droids within the cluttered interior of Watto's junk shop on Tatooine. Across three closely sequenced frames, the workshop environment surrounds them with mechanical debris and salvaged parts, offering a rare strip that documents both iconic characters together in one of the film's most textured and detail-rich locations.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
