FILM NOTES

George Lucas returned to the director's chair for the first time since the original Star Wars in 1977, delivering Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace through Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox in May 1999. The film launched a prequel trilogy that reshaped blockbuster filmmaking, introducing digital backlot production techniques and a generation of new characters to one of cinema's most enduring mythologies. Shot on 35mm before Lucas transitioned to digital acquisition, the surviving film elements carry particular documentary weight.

This cell, titled Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, captures consecutive frames from what appears to be an interior scene bathed in warm amber and orange light. Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are visible as the two silhouetted figures across the first two frames, with Ian McDiarmid and Jimmy Smits appearing in the third as Chancellor Palpatine and Bail Organa amid the same warm tonal atmosphere.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
