FILM NOTES

George Lucas returned to the director's chair for the first time in over two decades when Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox released Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in May 1999. The film launched a prequel trilogy that expanded the mythology of one of cinema's most enduring franchises, drawing enormous global audiences and reigniting widespread interest in the Star Wars universe.

This cell, titled R2-D2 & C-3PO, captures a close-up sequence set against what appears to be the Tatooine Podrace arena. R2-D2, performed by Kenny Baker, dominates the foreground across the continuous frames, while Anthony Daniels as C-3PO is partially visible in the background amid the sandy, crowd-filled environment.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
