FILM NOTES

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace arrived in May 1999 from Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox, carrying the weight of a sixteen-year absence from the saga. Directed by George Lucas, it was among the first major studio productions to explore digital filmmaking at scale, and its theatrical run became a cultural event that defined the summer blockbuster at the turn of the millennium.

This cell, titled Darth Maul by the operator, presents Ray Park in three consecutive close-up frames from what appears to be a Tatooine sequence. The character's distinctive red and black facial markings fill the frame against a pale, hazy background, capturing one of cinema's most visually striking antagonists in an unguarded, atmospheric moment between action.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
