FILM NOTES

Lucasfilm's Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace arrived in May 1999 after sixteen years without a Star Wars theatrical release, carrying one of the most anticipated debuts in cinema history. Directed by George Lucas and distributed by 20th Century Fox, the prequel introduced a new generation to the saga while returning longtime fans to a galaxy they had never quite left. Shot on 35mm alongside early digital photography experiments, the film marked a transitional moment in blockbuster filmmaking.

This cell, titled Darth Maul, captures Ray Park in close-up, his character's red and black tattooed face filling the frame across three adjacent moments. The low camera angle and dramatic lighting emphasize the severity of the design, one of the most visually striking character introductions of the era.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
