FILM NOTES

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace was released by Lucasfilm through 20th Century Fox in May 1999, arriving after a sixteen-year gap since Return of the Jedi. The prequel generated extraordinary anticipation and became one of the highest-grossing films of its decade, introducing a new generation to the saga while expanding the mythology for longtime audiences. Shot on 35mm before Lucas transitioned to digital acquisition, the film represents a transitional moment in blockbuster filmmaking.

This cell, titled Darth Maul, captures Ray Park in close-up or medium shot against a dark background with warm reddish-brown tones suggesting a desert or interior setting. The sequential frames preserve the same composition and lighting, offering a sustained look at one of the film's most visually striking figures in a moment of quiet menace.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
