FILM NOTES

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace was released by Lucasfilm through 20th Century Fox in May 1999, arriving sixteen years after Return of the Jedi and carrying the full weight of that anticipation. Directed by George Lucas, it introduced a new generation to the saga while expanding the mythology backward in time. Shot on 35mm alongside early digital photography tests, the film marked a transitional moment in Hollywood production history.

This cell, titled Darth Maul, captures Ray Park in the role across three closely related frames set against rocky, shadowed terrain consistent with the Tatooine sequences. The low available light and partial framing give the frames an atmospheric quality, preserving a quiet, menacing stillness from one of cinema's most visually striking antagonists.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
