FILM NOTES

Back to the Future Part II arrived from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment in November 1989, the middle chapter of Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale's trilogy. Following the massive success of the original, the sequel took the unprecedented step of depicting multiple timelines simultaneously, including a nightmarish alternate 1985 that gave the film its most visually striking and thematically unsettling passages. It remains a landmark of late-1980s studio filmmaking and a touchstone of popular science fiction cinema.

The Hill Valley Sign cell captures a figure crouching beside the weathered, damaged Welcome to the City of Hill Valley sign during the dystopian alternate-1985 sequence. Across three frames from the same moment, slight variations in exposure and framing record the sign's deteriorated state, with the final frame showing the figure and sign partially cut at the right edge — a natural artifact of the original photography.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
