Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment released Back to the Future Part II in November 1989, reuniting director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale with the cast of their 1985 blockbuster. The sequel pushed into ambitious territory, sending Marty and Doc thirty years forward to a then-imagined 2015. Shooting on the future Hill Valley sequences required extensive practical construction and early digital compositing, making the production a landmark in late-eighties effects filmmaking.

This cell, titled Marty McFly Jr. and Marty McFly, captures Michael J. Fox sharing the frame with himself through dual-role optical photography. Three consecutive frames preserve the same interior shot, giving the collector a sustained look at the technical sleight of hand that placed Marty McFly alongside his son, Marty McFly Jr., within a single continuous image.
