Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment released Back to the Future Part II in November 1989, reuniting director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale with their cast for an ambitious sequel that pushed the original film's time-travel premise into bold new territory. Shooting on 35mm, the production balanced practical effects with early digital compositing to realize its vision of 2015, the reimagined 1985, and a darker version of Hill Valley.
