FILM NOTES

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment released Back to the Future Part II in November 1989, reuniting director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale with one of the decade's most beloved casts. The film pushed into ambitious territory, sending its characters to a then-distant 2015 before pivoting to a darker reimagined past. It remains a landmark of studio filmmaking, blending practical effects, optical work, and production design in ways that still reward close attention.

This three-frame sequence captures the DeLorean time machine in what reads as a flying departure or arrival, filmed from an elevated angle above the treeline. The intense light bloom dominating each frame reflects the practical and optical effects work used to render time travel on screen, with the vehicle just visible through the overexposure — a rare look at the mechanics behind one of cinema's most iconic props in motion.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
