FILM NOTES

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment released Back to the Future Part II in November 1989, reuniting director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale with one of the decade's most beloved properties. The film pushed practical and optical effects to their limits, depicting multiple timelines and a then-futuristic 2015 that captured the cultural imagination. It remains a landmark of late-eighties blockbuster filmmaking and a touchstone for science fiction cinema.

This cell, titled Time Travel, captures the aerial storm sequence over Hill Valley in which the swirling energy vortex and cascading lightning tendrils define the film's signature visual language of temporal displacement. The layered electrical effects and churning cloudscape, rendered across three progressive frames, represent the kind of large-scale practical optical work that made the production technically ambitious for its era.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
