Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment released Back to the Future Part II in November 1989, reuniting director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale with the cast of their 1985 blockbuster. Expanding the time-travel mythology into 2015, 1955, and an alternate 1985, the sequel pushed practical and optical effects to new limits and became one of the defining science fiction films of its era, cementing the franchise as a cultural touchstone.
