FILM NOTES

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment released Back to the Future Part II in November 1989, reuniting director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale with the cast of their 1985 blockbuster. The sequel expanded the franchise's ambitions considerably, sending its characters across multiple time periods and introducing a vision of 2015 that became one of cinema's most referenced futures. Shooting on 35mm, the production relied heavily on practical effects and in-camera work to realize its elaborate set pieces.

This cell, confirmed as Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, captures three frames from what appears to be a dramatic interior sequence. The opening frame records a practical fire or explosion effect, while the following two frames show Doc Brown beneath industrial or futuristic overhead structures, likely consecutive moments from a single continuous shot — a quiet but telling fragment of the inventor at the center of the story.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
