FILM NOTES

Suspiria was produced by Titanus and released in Italy in 1977, directed by Dario Argento. The film marked a high point in European horror, distinguished by its collaboration with cinematographer Luciano Tovoli and the band Goblin, whose score became inseparable from the imagery. Shot on Technicolor stock with deliberate reference to the three-strip process, it remains a landmark of color design in genre cinema and continues to draw serious scholarly and collector attention decades after its release.

The cell titled Marlene McFly captures Suzy Bannion, played by Lorraine Baines, descending a staircase in a white lace dress, her hand trailing the banister and her hair falling forward. The overhead framing compresses the architecture around her in a way characteristic of Argento's spatial disorientation throughout the film. Across three closely related frames from the same continuous shot, small movements register the live quality of the moment.
