Lionsgate Films released The Punisher in April 2004, bringing Marvel's vigilante antihero back to the screen after a 1989 adaptation. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and starring Thomas Jane in the title role, the film occupies a particular moment in superhero cinema, arriving just before the genre's dominant phase and reflecting a grittier, R-rated sensibility that distinguished it from contemporaries. It developed a devoted cult following on home video.
