Lions Gate Films released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's vigilante antihero for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and starring Thomas Jane in the title role, the film leaned into grounded brutality rather than comic-book spectacle, earning a devoted cult following despite mixed critical reception.
