Lionsgate's 2004 adaptation of Marvel's Punisher arrived at a moment when comic-book cinema was finding its commercial footing, offering a grittier, more revenge-driven counterpoint to the era's emerging superhero blockbusters. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and starring Thomas Jane, the film leaned into pulp crime tradition, drawing comparisons to 1970s vigilante pictures rather than the emerging franchise model that would soon dominate the genre.
