Lionsgate released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle leaned into the character's grief and methodical brutality, distinguishing the film from its 1989 predecessor. Shot largely on location in Tampa, Florida, the production gave the story a sun-bleached, noir-inflected atmosphere that set it apart from the era's shinier superhero offerings.
