Lionsgate Films released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle leaned into grief and obsession rather than spectacle, giving the film a darker, more personal register than its contemporaries. Shot largely in Tampa, Florida, it remains a distinctive entry in the early wave of Marvel adaptations before the studio system consolidated around a single cinematic universe.
