Lionsgate Films released The Punisher in April 2004, adapting Marvel's long-running vigilante comic for a post-9/11 audience hungry for morally complicated action. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle brought a brooding, grounded quality to the character, and the film found a devoted following on home video that outlasted its modest theatrical run. It remains a notable entry in the early wave of Marvel adaptations that preceded the studio era.
