Lionsgate Films released The Punisher in April 2004, bringing Marvel's vigilante antihero to screens during a period when comic adaptations were testing the boundaries of darker, R-rated storytelling. Thomas Jane's portrayal of Frank Castle offered a grittier alternative to the superhero films dominating the era, and the production remains a notable entry in the early wave of Marvel cinema before the unified universe took shape.
